Ben Sim has finished in 34th place in the men’s 10km freestyle event at the world junior championships.

Sim’s 7.47% behind the winner is the second best result by an Australian skier in a distance race at a World Junior Championship, bettered only by his own performance in the 30km freestyle last year.

In fast, wet conditions, the field was incredibly tight in the early part of the race, with the Cooma skier in 27th place after 5km, and a stack of skiers within only a few seconds.

He dropped to 34th place at the 7.5km mark, and then hung onto this place to the finish.

Ewan Watson made his world junior championship debut, finishing in 82nd place from 88 starters with personal best FIS points of 154.28.

The race was won by German Franz Goering by just three seconds from Kazakhstan skier Yevgeniy Koschevoy

In the women’s 5km freestyle, Aimee Watson finished in 73rd place, with Sally Cunningham in 76th. Watson’s FIS points of 163.62 were a personal best.
