Tim's Story
Adelaide-born Tim Willoughby developed as a rower with the Adelaide University Boat Club and became a five-time Australian national champion. He made his Olympic debut at Moscow 1980, aged 26, as a member of the Australian men’s eight. The crew advanced through the repechage before finishing fifth in the final.
Willoughby won bronze with the Australian eight at the 1983 World Rowing Championships before returning to Olympic competition at Los Angeles 1984. Australia sat second behind Canada at the halfway mark of the final but was overtaken by the United States, securing bronze and the nation’s first Olympic medal in the men’s eight since 1968. Willoughby later moved to Perth, where he contributed to rowing as a coach and remained closely involved with the Australian Olympic movement.
