ON Thursday the 16th of June, the Queensland Olympic Council presented the 2005 Pierre de Coubertin Awards at the Playhouse Theatre, Queensland Performing Arts Centre in Brisbane.

This year 110 students of the 190 state wide recipients attended the presentation and were presented with their certificates and Olympic pins by the Minister for Education and Minister for the Arts Hon Anna Bligh MP and Athens 2004 Olympic Swimming Silver Medallist Nicholas Sprenger. Students from all over the state attended the awards, traveling from as far as Charters Towers, Roma and St George to Ingham, Trinity Beach and Biloela.

Channel Seven’s Victoria Carthew did an outstanding job as Master of Ceremonies, entertaining the students and parents with her quick wit and sporting knowledge. Guests were treated to a DVD presentation by Nicole Rutland from Palm Beach-Currumbin State High School entitled the “Olympic Movement” as well as Laura Worboys of St George State High School who recited her inspiring poem entitled “Coming Together”.

Nick Sprenger, a former Pierre de Coubertin award recipient in 2002, entertained the audience by sharing his Olympic experiences from Athens and offering some valuable words of advice “Aim for the moon, as you will only fall amongst the stars”.

Several other Queensland Olympians attended the awards presentation and were able to join the students following the formalities providing our aspiring athletes with words of encouragement.

Trevor Beckingham, a valuable member of the QOC Education Commission received the Pierre de Coubertin Service Award for 2005 for all his valuable work with the Pierre de Coubertin Awards and the QOC Education Initiative.
