ALPINE SKIING: Aussie Greta Small is eyeing one last run to make a statement on the international stage at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games.
Having competed in the women’s super-g and downhill with mixed results, Greta is be aiming to end her Olympic campaign on a high when she returns to the Yanqing National Alpine Skiing Centre.
The alpine combined event is discipline where the racer contests one technical event and one speed event on the same day, the downhill and slalom. An athlete’s time from both events are combined to determine the best overall time and medallists.
Challenging conditions throughout the Olympic Games has caused significant issues for competitors across the board, with many skiers failing to complete the courses. Both the downhill and slalom will have the same number of gates and difficulty, with racers having one run at each course.
In her third Olympic Games, Greta will be keen to see how she fares after recording a DNF (Did Not Finish) at PyeongChang 2018 when she was carrying an injury.
The downhill and slalom runs, known as ‘the Rock’ and 'the Ice River’ respectively, are the same courses used in the individual events. This will give racers some much needed familiarity.
Watch Greta from 1:30pm AEDT in the downhill section, where she is no.2 on the start list, and from 5pm AEDT in the slalom.
