The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has announced the launch of Amis 2024, an Australian Olympic Connect program that will link Australian and French high school students in shared excitement ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Registrations are now open to secondary schools across the nation, with the free eight-week program available to schools with a French language program and targeted at students aged 12 to 15 years old.

The tagline 'Amis 2024', French for 'Friends 2024', embodies the core purpose of the program, to foster lasting friendships and relationships between Australian and French students.

Building on the success of the inaugural edition of the program, which brought together 300 Japanese and 300 Australian schools ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Amis 2024 will continue the legacy of fostering international connections through the power of sport and celebrating the Olympic spirit.

After registering, Australian classrooms will be connected with French schools through video calls, letters, videos and class exercises leading into the Paris Olympic Games.

AOC CEO Matt Carroll said he was delighted to see the Australian Olympic Connect program bring students from Australia and France together ahead of the Olympic Games.

"Following the success of a similar program ahead of the Tokyo Games, I am excited to see Amis 2024 bring students from France and Australia together to experience the Olympic spirit leading into the Paris 2024 Games," Mr Carroll said.

"The program represents a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to build international relationships and is an example of the extraordinary power of sport to bring people together.

"Thank you to the Australian Embassy in France, the French Embassy in Australia, and the French Government for helping bring the program to life."

Olympic gold medallist and Paris 2024 Australian Olympic Team member Jess Fox, who was born in Marseille, France, said she wishes the program was available when she was at school.

"Amis 2024 provides a fantastic opportunity for students to connect during the Olympic Games and engage with international students and schools," Jess said.

"Australian and French students will be able to build connections that could last beyond Paris 2024 and inspire students to travel and immerse themselves in a different culture."

"As an athlete who travels a lot to compete, discovering and learning about new cultures has always been something I value and find very enriching."

"It's a way to broaden your perspective and learn about different people, history, language and food. What a wonderful opportunity to create connections and bring students from the opposite side of the world together to celebrate the Games and our two cultures, and what better time do to it than during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games!"

Australia's Ambassador to France Gillian Bird welcomed the program.

"The Australian Embassy in France is proud to support Amis 2024, which exemplifies the innate power of sport to build bridges between different peoples and cultures," said Ms Bird.

"The core values of Amis 2024 - friendship and multiculturalism - are at the heart of Australia's rich and longstanding relationship with France. I encourage our schools to seize this opportunity to connect with one another.

"As Australia prepares to host major sporting events, such as the 2027 Rugby World Cup and the 2032 Brisbane Olympics and Paralympics, forging closer ties with France at all levels, including schools, will help us learn from its experience and create increasingly sustainable, inclusive, and spectacular sporting events."

H.E. Pierre-Andre Imbert, Ambassador of France to Australia, expressed his commitment to fostering international connections through sport ahead of the Paris Olympic Games.

"We're delighted to work with the Australian Olympic Committee on this program," Mr Imbert said.

"We are especially excited to connect our cultures through sport, bringing together teachers and students from across the world and highlighting the long-lasting relationship between France and Australia, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific region.

"Amis 2024 truly embodies the Olympic spirit and is a great opportunity for French and Australian high school students to expand their horizon and discover each other's cultures and languages ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics, which will also take place in French Polynesia for the Surfing competition."
