AOC and BOA sign new Co-Operation Agreement

Australia’s athletes training for the London Games in 2012 will “benefit enormously” from a new partnership between the Australian Olympic

Australia’s athletes training for the London Games in 2012 will “benefit enormously” from a new partnership between the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) and the British Olympic Association (BOA).

Under the Co-Operation agreement Australian athletes will be invited to train and compete in Britain in the lead up to the London Games.

In particular they will be invited to compete in Olympic test events.

The agreement was signed in Sydney today by AOC President John Coates and Lord Colin Moynihan, Chairman of the BOA.

“Being able to live, train and compete in London prior to 2012 will be an enormous benefit to our athletes” Coates said. “Competing in the actual Olympic venues is vital to our preparation”.

Under the agreement the BOA will recommend sports venues and accommodation throughout Britain where the Australian teams can be based for pre-Games training.

“We will assist the AOC to identify suitable sports facilities and accommodation for pre-Games training in Great Britain. I am sure we will be able to exchange ideas and best practices in many more areas,” Lord Moynihan said.

In return the AOC will encourage its member sports to invite British athletes to Australia to participate in international competitions.

The AOC will also invite the BOA to send a team to Sydney to the Australian Youth Olympic Festivals in 2009 and 2011.

Britain has a team of 112 athletes and 64 officials currently in Sydney ready to compete in the 2007 AYOF which begins on Wednesday.

The AYOF is recognised as the breeding ground for future Olympic athletes and many National Olympic Committees’ are using the event to groom their future champions.

The AOC has also promised to provide advice to the BOA on its experiences as host of the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

"As the host National Olympic Committee for the London 2012 Olympic Games we look forward to receiving input from the AOC on its experience in connection with the Sydney 2000 Games,” Moynihan said.
