Statement from Ian Chesterman – AOC President
Sir Donald had a profound impact on the Olympic Movement in Australia.
His service on our Executive board came at an important time, covering the lead up to Sydney and setting the AOC up with a strong financial base.
He was passionate about the Olympics and what the athletes do for our country.
His vision in developing our Prime Minister’s Olympic Dinner, our Australian Olympic Team premier corporate event, has raised more than $20 million since its inception in 1984.
Sir Donald always provided wise advice and counsel to me and I greatly appreciated his support.
He will be greatly missed.
Our deepest condolences go to Sir Donald’s family.
Statement from IOC Member in Australia John Coates
Sir Donald made a massive contribution to the AOC, in terms of corporate credibility and in his role as the first chair of the Australian Olympic Foundation Investment Advisory Committee.
With good discipline and sound diversification across the various investment sectors, the Foundation has played such an important role in ensuring the financial independence of the AOC.
Sir Donald had a number of philanthropic causes he supported but was not backward in recently telling me that his involvement in the Australian Olympic movement was what he enjoyed the most.
As with Ian, Sir Donald always gave me wise advice.
I am deeply gratified to know that he did enjoy the success of the Australian Team in Paris in the weeks prior to his passing.
My sincere condolences also to all members of Sir Donald’s family.
