The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has wished the Australian Special Olympics Team well ahead of their participation in the Special Olympics World Games.

A Team of 64 Australian athletes is currently in Berlin, Germany and set to compete alongside 7,000 athletes with intellectual disability.

AOC President Ian Chesterman has wished the entire Team good luck for their campaign, which runs across nine days of competition between Saturday 17 June and Sunday 25 June.

“I wish our Special Olympics Team all the very best for your campaign in Berlin,” Mr Chesterman said.

“It’s a wonderful achievement and a special honour to represent Australia and I know all Team members and support staff will be rightly proud to do their very best for their country.

“So much training and preparation has gone into preparing for the Games. Every athlete is supported by a team, my congratulations extend to the family and friends who have helped so much along the way.

“To the athletes, on behalf of the Australian Olympic Committee and the Olympic movement in Australia, go well and enjoy this extraordinary moment.”

After months of training, the Team is poised to compete across nine of the 26 different sporting events within the Special Olympics - including athletics, basketball, bocce, bowling, equestrian, golf, gymnastic, swimming and tennis.

Recognised by the International Olympic Committee and held every four years, the Special Olympics World Games is anticipated to host 300,000 spectators.
