The AOC says the decision by boxer Justis Huni to withdraw from the Australian Olympic Team for Tokyo is disappointing but understandable.

Chef de Mission for the Tokyo Team Ian Chesterman says the boxer has made the right decision to withdraw.

“This is very sad for Justis and for the whole boxing squad going to Tokyo. From what we understand given the medical circumstances, this is certainly the right decision.

“He is a young man with a big career ahead of him. To take this injury to Tokyo posed an unacceptable risk to that career.”

Mr Chesterman says it is not unusual for boxers to continue competition close to Olympic Games.

“Ultimately, that’s a decision for the athlete. In all sports, people need to compete and boxing is no different. Competition always carries risk. It’s just incredibly bad luck.”

“We wish Justis well in his recovery,” Mr Chesterman concluded.
