Australia's archers enjoyed their first taste of competitive action at Lord's by defeating a crack Italian team before being rolled by a world record-breaking Korean outfit at the Olympic test event.

Australia's men's team of Taylor Worth, Matthew Gray and Ryan Tyack upset a strong Italian threesome that included world champion Michele Frangilli and Olympic champion Marco Galiazzo 221 to 217 in the morning round.

However Korea's team of Im Dong-Hyun, Kim Wooking and Oh Jin-Hyek brought the Australians back to earth in their afternoon quarter-final in miserable conditions in London.

The Koreans broke their own world record in a 233 to 209 victory before stumbling in the semi-final against eventual winners, the United States.

Gray, a member of Australia's gold medal winning team at last year's Delhi Commonwealth Games, said it had been an encouraging outing for his team.

"We got a feel for the conditions and it was an experience in itself at Lord's," Gray said.

"Archery has never had a venue like Lord's, every part of it is like a bowling green.

"This exercise is for information gathering, we want to make sure when we come back in nine months' time that we are fully prepared.

"I think defeating a top-ranked team like Italy was a good sign for us."

Australia has the chance to qualify a team for the London Games in June in the United States.
