Taylor Worth of Team Australia competes in the Men's Individual Ranking Round during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at Yumenoshima Park Archery Field on July 23, 2021 in Tokyo, Japa

The individual ranking rounds descended on Yumenoshima Archery Park, with Taylor Worth, Ryan Tyack and Dave Barnes joining Alice Ingley in formalities that determine first round matches when competition officially commences officially.

Worth, a Rio 2016 bronze medallist in the team event, led the charge in the men’s competition, scoring 651 points from his 72 arrows to place 39th overall.

His fellow medallist Ryan Tyack was next, delivering a 650 for 42nd, while Dave Barnes on return to the competition arena at the Olympic Games for the first time since 2004 scored 648 points for 50th.

“I was happy with the first half of my performance, but in the beginning of the second was having a bit of trouble with the wind before shooting my best end to finish,” Tyack said.

“The more important stuff happens after today, though. That’s what matters.”

Barnes echoed the sentiment, confirming the priority today was confirming their seeding for the men’s individual and team events in the days ahead.

"The main thing from today was to get our seedings for the men's team competition. We wanted to get into the top four and have one less match, but that wasn't to be,” Barnes said.

“We're certainly not looking to go backwards (from Rio) and we're still fully focused on the objective (of winning gold)."

Australia’s male trio now come together for team competition on Monday 26 July.

In the individual events, Worth will next draw his arrow on the morning of 29 July against Alviyanto Prastyadi (INA), before Tyack competes against Nicholas D’Amour (ISV) and Barnes versus Riau Salsabilla (INA).

Alice Ingley flew the flag in the women’s individual ranking round held earlier in the day.

Competing at her second Olympic Games, the 28-year-old shot 616 points from her 12 rounds of six arrow to book a duel with Ksenia Perova (ROC) in the first round of competition.

Ingley has previously declared she has unfinished business from Rio 2016, with a result beyond the round-of-16 equal to an Olympic best performance for the west-Australian born archer.

Competition for Australia continues with the men’s team competition on Monday 26 July, before men’s and women’s individual competition from Tuesday 27 July.
