ARCHERY: The competition for final places on the Australian archery team for this year’s Rio Olympics will come to a head at a selection camp in Brisbane this weekend.
It will bring to an end a 12-month process, which has involved Australia’s top four male archers competing against each other for the three positions available on the Olympic team.
2012 Olympian, Taylor Worth, three-time Olympian, Matt Gray, former world indoor champion, Ryan Tyack, and Victoria’s Alec Potts, have all been in the mix to earn Australian selection since Australia qualified its men’s team at last year’s World Championships.
Australia will have only one female competitor in Rio, with Queensland’s Semra Ferguson expected to confirm her nomination this weekend.
At last year’s World Championships, it was Worth, Tyack and Potts who performed the best, and the trio maintained their form at subsequent training camps and World Cup events.
But at this year’s only World Cup so far it was Potts who led the way, posting the highest ever score by an Australian at an international event, with Gray the next best performer ahead of Tyack and Worth.
The top two finishers at the Mt Petrie Archery Club in Bowman this weekend will be nominated to the Australian Olympic Committee, with selectors choosing the third nominee.
The final shoot-off will take place on Sunday morning.
