Artistic Swimming Duet Paris 2024

Australia’s Rayna Buckle and Kiera Gazzard delivered an electrifying performance in the Duet Technical Artistic Swimming competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

They showcased their routine to the iconic "Charlie's Angels 2000" soundtrack by Apollo 440. Their performance was a brilliant combination of athleticism, synchronisation and creativity capturing the essence of the bold and empowered theme they chose.

With a degree of difficulty of 34.350, the Australian duet scored 210.0782 (elements: 128.4282, artistic impression: 81.6500) for a 14th place position heading into the Duet Free routine.

The Australians began with a striking "rocket split alternating legs" element, which immediately grabbed the judges' attention with its difficulty and precision. Their mastery in executing the technical elements required, coupled with their well-timed transitions into the free hybrid elements, demonstrated their technical prowess.

The routine's climax featured a spectacular lift, showcasing their strength and coordination, followed by the final figure that concluded the routine on a high note.

“We only started swimming together two years ago, at the start of 2022, and we've only been working on this duet with our coach, Paula (Klamburg), for a year and a half,” said Kiera.

"We have Duet on top of the Team training, so it's got a lot of hours behind it now."
Despite their limited partnership, the scores on the board reflected a well-oiled artistic swimming machine.

Throughout the routine, Rayna and Kiera maintained impeccable synchronisation, a critical aspect of Artistic Swimming. Their ability to seamlessly transition between the required elements and the free hybrids while maintaining the routine’s thematic coherence was a testament to their training and preparation at the Hancock Prospecting Artistic Swimming Australia Centre of Excellence in Perth.

“We live and train in Perth, so we do the duet training in the morning before team and then in the afternoon after team,” Kiera said.

"Since Tokyo, where we both only participated in team events, the opportunity to participate in duet events makes it even more special."

Rayna hopes their performance at these Games is just the start for Australia’s success in the sport.

“It's heart warming to see how far Australia has come since Tokyo. It's a good lead-up to hopefully Brisbane 2032, where artistic swimming for Australia will be even better there.”

As they continue their journey in Artistic Swimming, they have set a strong foundation for future success and left a memorable mark in Paris 2024.

The pair return to round out Australia’s artistic swimming campaign at 3:30am AEST on Sunday 11 August.
