The women's basketball team suffered their first defeat of the tournament, going down to Japan 17 - 10.
"We tried everything but nothing seemed to work," Rosie Fadljevic said.
The tough heat conditions, a new playing strategy and poor shooting did nothing to assist their efforts.
"Our coach put the smaller girls on to spread the court a little bit, but it didn't seem to work. I don't know why.
As a whole our game wasn't that great.
Faking and driving to the basket was one of the better aspects but we only shot seven per cent."
The Aussies knew the Japanese would be tough.
"We expected them to be really strong and to be able to shoot from the outside, drive to the basket and get good layups."
The girls now meet Italy in their final pool match tomorrow. They need to win to finish in the top 8 and have any chance of a medal.
