SAILING: Australia has been the best performed nation at the first Rio de Janeiro Olympic Test Event, winning four medals in the week long sailing regatta.
The team won two gold medals on the final day of the Aquece Rio Regatta, through 2012 Olympic gold medallist Mat Belcher and world champion crew Will Ryan in the Men's 470 and Tom Burton in the Laser.
This followed up silver medal efforts in the penultimate day by 2012 Olympic gold medallists Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen in the 49er class and Darren Bundock and Nina Curtis in the Nacra 17, the new mixed-gender multihull class in the 2016 Olympic program.
Australians contested six events at the regatta.
Matt Wearn finished fifth in the Laser category. Steve Thomas and Rhys Mara 12th in the 49er division and Angus Galloway and Rob Crawford 21st in the 470 class.
Olivia Price and Eliza Solly came 4th in the 49erFX and Ashley Stoddart finished 18th in the Laser Radial class.
The next major regatta for the Australians is ISAF sailing world championship, which takes place in Santander, northern Spain from 8-21 September.
