As temperatures soared above 40 degrees out at the Sydney International Shooting Centre Australia has won two shooting medals on day two of the competition.

Lachlan Tremble bagged a silver medal in the men’s 25 metre rapid fire pistol after featuring in a gold medal shoot-out with Great Britain’s Kristian Callaghan after both achieved a total score of seven in the final.

Callaghan then scored one in the shoot-out while Tremble scored zero, giving the Brit the gold. Canadian Jeremy Gyoerick received bronze.

Tremble was pleased with his performance in the final, after facing after facing a few stumbling blocks in the qualification round.

“At the start of the qualifications I was going extremely well but towards the end of it I had quite a few malfunctions so my score suffered a bit from that,” Tremble said.

“I came out in the final, fixed the gun so I had no problems there. I just hoped for the best and managed to shoot half decent in the final it was just enough trying to keep the nerves at bay.”

The 18 year-old from Katoomba was ecstatic to have featured on the medal dais.  

“It is awesome. I can’t quite feel anything yet as I’m still pumping with adrenaline after the final, but so far it feels fantastic,” Tremble said.

Australian Edwin Gouw then claimed a bronze medal in the 10 metre air rifle final in a tightly contested final that came down to the final shot.

China’s Haoran Yang won his second gold medal of the competition with an overall score of 688.4. Silver went to Great Britain with Michael Bamsey scoring 687.9. Gouw scored a total of 686.8 to claim bronze.

Gouw was pleased with how he performed in the final.

“I was pretty happy. I could have done better that’s for sure but I am happy with how I went,” Gouw said.

“I am going to continue to shoot every day, train hard and aim for higher goals.

“I am glad that I have been able to represent the Australian shooting team at the Australian Youth Olympic festival.”

In other results, Great Britain won gold in the women’s skeet with Sian Bruce scoring 82. Lingli Kang from China claimed silver with 80 and Amy Van Bysterveldt bronze with 72. Conditions were particularly testing due to the extreme heat on the shotgun range.

The final day of competition will kick off at 9:00am on Saturday morning with Emily Esposito looking to claim another medal for Australia in the women’s 25 metre sport pistol and James Grice in the men’s trap.
