RUGBY SEVENS: Australia has topped Pool B on day one of the Kitakyushu Sevens in Japan with victories over Brazil (38-0), Ireland (36-0) and Fiji (17-12) to ensure their progression the Quarter Finals.
Ellia Green was at her blistering best scoring five tries across day one as Chloe Dalton added 22 points to her tally.
Australia will play the best third place finisher in Quarter Final one on Sunday 23 April with kick off at 11.30am AEST.
Qantas Australian Women’s Sevens Head Coach, Tim Walsh said: “The first two games were awesome and we had a great start against Fiji in the last match. We got a bit loose with the ball but we were able to close it out.
“It was really good to give a lot of minutes to Demi Hayes, Dom Du Toit and Emma Sykes to help the girls coming through. The experienced girls played really well and worked hard when we needed to close out the game (against Fiji).
“Everyone is in best the knick that they could be and we’ll be ready for tomorrow.”
Australia 38 defeated Brazil 0
Australia shot out of the blocks early against brazil with youngster, Demi Hayes making her mark on the tournament with a try in the opening minutes to give Australia a 7-0 lead. Australia’s dominance continued to show against the South Americans with Dom Du Toit and Emma Sykes both crossing the white line to give the Aussie 7s a strong 21-0 lead. Chloe Dalton, who had not missed with the boot yet, brushed off two defenders to score the final try of the first half to take a 28-0 lead.
The second half saw Head Coach Tim Walsh ring in the changes as Charlotte Caslick, Georgia Friedrichs and Ellia Green entered the fray. A second try to Demi Hayes and to Ellia Green pushed the women in gold out to a 38-0 lead where the score would remain at full time.
Australia 36 defeated Ireland 0
Emilee Cherry was at her blistering best in the opening minute against Ireland, slicing through the Irish defence to score and give Australia a 5-0 advantage. Australia continued to mount the pressure on Ireland as Demi Hayes scored her third try of the day to take a 10-0 lead. Ellia Green was given space out wide and allowed to cross just before the break giving the Aussie 7s a 17-0 lead.
The second half saw Ireland throw more at their Australian counterparts but the experience of the Aussie 7s was too much as Ellia Green and Chloe Dalton both crossed for tries. A final try to Evania Pelite sealed the match for Australia giving the Aussie a 36-0 victory with a point yet to be scored against them in the tournament.
Australia 17 defeated Fiji 12
A great tactical kick by Chloe Dalton buried the Aussie 7s in Fiji’s red zone and a wide pass from Charlotte Caslick put Ellia Green over in the corner for a 5-0 lead. Fiji fought their way into the game and tested Australia’s defence as they marched the Aussies up the field. Australia eventually effected a turnover and countered quickly to get the ball out to Ellia Green who took Australia’s lead to 12-0 where the score would sit at half time.
Australia started the second half continuing to mount the pressure on Fiji, with Charlotte Caslick kicking through in behind the defence to regather and score as Australia took a 17-0 lead. Momentum swung quickly as Fiji scored two quick tries within 60 seconds to bring the match within striking distance at 17-12. Fiji attacked the line late but the Aussie 7s defence was able to hold on to ensure Australia went undefeated on day one.
