WATER POLO: The Australian Women’s Water Polo Team have snatched 11-10 victory from Russia in the opening round of the World League Super Final.
With scores locked in the final minute of the game, it came down to the dying seconds with Rio hopeful Bronte Halligan producing the match winning goal right on the buzzer.
It’s a sign of things to come in Rio, with Australia drawing Russia in the opening round of the Olympic Games on 9 August.
London Olympian Glencora McGhie was the leading goal scorer for the Australians putting away three goals.
“It was a really tough game. The Russians are really good at counter attack and they did capitalise on our lapses in defence.
“But we managed to sneak through with a win which is an exciting way to kick start the Tournament,” said McGhie.
The Aussies will face China tomorrow Wednesday 8 June at 9:00pm (AEST) in game two of the prelims.
The World League Super Final is the Aussies Stingers last major tournament prior to the Rio Olympics.
