Aussies in running for IOC Athletes' Commission

Four new members of the IOC Athletes Commission will be elected at the Beijing Games with Grant Hackett, Andrew Hoy, Natalie Cook and James Tomkins being talked

Four new members of the IOC Athletes Commission will be elected at the Beijing Games with Grant Hackett, Andrew Hoy, Natalie Cook and James Tomkins being talked about as possible contenders.

The successful candidates who are recognised as IOC members will be elected by their peers for a period of eight years.

For the first time the athletes will have to choose their representatives from four different sports.

Susie O’Neill was the last Australian athlete elected to the IOC Athletes Commission.

O'Neill was elected by athletes attending the Sydney 2000 Games. She later resigned due to family commitments.

Other Australian athletes elected to the IOC Athletes Commission include Michelle Ford (1981/88) and Peter Montgomery (1988/99).

Members of the AOC Athletes' Commission will recommend a 2008 candidate to the AOC Executive Board in August.

The AOC will nominate our candidate to the IOC in September.
