West Australian Daria Joura defended her national women’s all-around crown with another stunning display of world class gymnastics at Vodafone Arena in Melbourne on Friday night.
Training partner Lauren Mitchell finished second in her first year as a senior with Commonwealth Games gold medallist Chloe Simms from Queensland in third.
After showing at last year’s world championships that she is on the verge of collecting medals at the major titles, Joura scored a convincing win and collected four gold medals, winning the all-around title along with the individual apparatus gold on floor, vault and uneven bars.
In doing so, she led the Australian team to an upset victory over reigning world champions China, coming from behind on the final apparatus to win by less than half a point.
Joura’s combined all-around total of 120.350 was made up of two consecutive 60-plus point displays, both bettering her previous best all-around total of 59.875 achieved in finishing fifth at last year’s world titles in Denmark.
The 17-year-old opened with her signature double-twisting Yurchenko vault, earning 15.100, the first time she has broken the 15-point barrier with the difficult manoeuvre.
After another improvement on uneven bars (15.600) her only stumble before her final floor routine came when she toppled off the balance beam to score 14.125.
Her final effort on floor gathered another 15.325 to ensure she comfortably defended her title. Commonwealth Games all-around champion Chloe Sims responded to some strong words from national coach Peggy Liddick after yesterday’s first round to improve on all of yesterday’s routines.
Despite the improvement she was unable to haul in 15-year-old West Australian Lauren Mitchell, who collected the silver medal in the all-around (117.625) and individual beam title in her first year in senior competition to enhance her claim on a spot in the Australian team for this year’s world titles.
Sims finished third with 115.525.
After hearing the news of their team win over China, whose team included two members of last year’s world championships winning team, Joura said the unexpected victory had overshadowed her individual performance.
“It’s pretty amazing. Before they read out the final result I was like, visualise the gold, visualise the gold.
“It’s great to perform like that with a team and it’s so exciting to beat the world champions.”
On her own performance, Joura said she was encouraged by the fact that she still has significant room for improvement.
“I’m happy with everything but the beam. I’ve just added that skill and I need more competition experience. I can do it a lot better and it’s something I need to work on.”
National coach Peggy Liddick was delighted with the performance of her young stars.
“Consistency is what it’s going to take and ‘Dasha’ has shown that she’s a 60-point performer. She fell twice on beam but we’d rather make that mistake here – it’s a risk we’re willing to take now.”
“Lauren Mitchell went eight from eight in her routines. She’s a rookie and she’s really exciting. She has the potential to be 63-point all-arounder.”
“Chloe responded exactly as planned. She needs to be motivated and I’m really proud of her and the way she performed tonight,” Liddick said.
The night completed a stellar two days for the West Australian’s, taking a clean sweep of the titles for the first time in the State’s history - winning the team title, Joura’s four individual titles along with Mitchell’s gold on beam.
