Australia is sitting in equal second place after the opening six rounds of the 2008 World Curling Championships in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

With a Vancouver 2010 Olympic berth resting on the outcome of the championships, the Australian skip Hugh Millikin has taken his team to a 4 games to 2 score line, with victories over Denmark (10-7), Germany (5-3), the Czech Republic (8-5) and the United States (6-4).

The team, which also includes New South Wales curlers Ian Palangio, Sean Hall and Steve Johns and Victorian Steve Hewitt, has lowered its colours to championship favourite Canada (3-9) and Sweden (5-6).

Australia has five more matches to complete in the 12 nation round robin stage of the tournament, the next one early on Wednesday afternoon AEST.

Canada leads the points table after the opening six rounds with six straight victories, while Germany shares second place with Australia on 4 wins to 2.

Qualification for the ten spots available in the Olympic field is based on performances at the three world championships of 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Australia put in a strong performance at the 2007 world titles, and it is estimated that a sixth place or better at these 2008 championships will be enough to seal an historic first Olympic curling berth.
