Australia seventh in Short Track World Team Championships

Australia has finished in seventh place in the 2007 Short Track World Team Championships, held last week in Budapest, Hungary. Skating in the Championship B bracket, the team of Jeremy Beck, Lachlan Hay, Alex Merriman, Elliott Shriane and Ben Southee collected 30 points to be pipped by one point by Germany for sixth place.

Australia has finished in seventh place in the 2007 Short Track World Team Championships, held last week in Budapest, Hungary.
 
Skating in the Championship B bracket, the team of Jeremy Beck, Lachlan Hay, Alex Merriman, Elliott Shriane and Ben Southee collected 30 points to be pipped by one point by Germany for sixth place.
 
Hungary led the B group with 41 points for fifth place overall from Germany on 31, Australia on 30 and the Ukraine on 16 points.

In the A bracket of the Men’s event, Canada took the title on 43 points from defending title-holder South Korea on 31 points.
 
Italy was a further seven points further back, with the United States in fourth place overall on 18 points.
 
In individual performances by the OWI team, Alex Merriman won his round of both the 500m and the 1000m, while Elliott Shriane was also victorious in his 1000m encounter.
 
Lachlan Hay placed second in his heat of the 1000m, and Jeremy Beck was third in the 3000m.
 
The Australian 5000m relay team of Hay, Merriman, Shriane and Southee finished in third place in the B bracket final in a time of 7 minutes 04.043 seconds, behind Germany on 7:03.242 and Hungary on 7:03.787.
 
In the ladies competition, Korea took the title on 56 points from China on 28 points.
