The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has signed a new Memorandum of Understanding with the Japanese National Olympic Committee, agreeing to collaborate on the development of the international Olympic sport movement and consult each other regarding current issues of concern and common interest.

The two National Olympic Committees (NOCs) have agreed to work together on a range of matters including cooperation in the fight against doping and abuse in sport, the use of sport as a tool for health and well-being, best practices in the field of commercial and marketing strategy and organisation of major sport events.

The extension of the MOU is also designed to foster collaboration and training exchanges between Australian and Japanese sports and support innovative programs within the field of high-performance sport and sport science research.

AOC President Ian Chesterman and AOC Chief Executive Officer Matt Carroll were guests of JOC Acting President Yuko Mitsuya at Japan House in Paris today to sign the agreement.

Mr Chesterman says the MOU will foster numerous areas of mutual benefit.

“With Brisbane 2032 fewer than eight years away, there’s a great deal to be gained for both NOCs in working together on common areas of interest.

“We remain greatly indebted to the people of Japan for the enormous effort they made to welcome the world to Tokyo 2020 in the middle of a global pandemic.

“The AOC also welcomed the opportunity to connect 600 Australian and Japanese schools ahead of the Tokyo Games. We hope similar programs can be developed ahead of Brisbane 2032 to strengthen those ties.

Madam Yuko Mitsuya says signing a new memorandum allows for further cooperation between the two National Olympic Committees.

“We are looking forward to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games and Australia hosting for the third time.

“Australian is well known for its high performance sports and also its great organisational skills.

“The agreement will allow us cooperate in areas such as athlete exchanges, coaching, sports medicine and share information about the Olympic movement,” she concluded.

The Australian and Japanese Olympic Committees first signed an MOU to foster collaboration in 2010.
