Australia’s women’s bobsleigh team has finished in 23rd place in the World Championships in Calgary, Canada.

Competing on the 1988 Olympic Games track, Astrid Loch-Wilkinson and new brakeman Brigitte Egan recorded a total time of two minutes 52.26 seconds for their three runs, with individual times of 57.33 seconds, 57.40 and 57.63.

It was the first time that an Australian women’s team has competed in the World Championships, doing it in a rented sled with only 14 weeks of sliding in all.

The event was won by Germany’s Sandra Kiriasis, defeating Nicola Minichiello of Great Britain by .28 of a second in total time for the four runs. Shauna Rohbock of the United States was third.

Kiriasis was the silver medallist in Salt Lake 2002, and has also won the World Cup title for the past three years.
