The Australian Women’s Water Polo team have shown they're genuine contenders come the Tokyo Olympic Games, after defeating reigning Olympic champions USA 10-9 in the second test in Brisbane.
The Aussie Stingers have ended the USA winning streak of 69 games in a row, producing a sensational second half to wow the home crowd in the dying seconds.
With less than 30 seconds on the clock Aussie Stingers Captain Rowie Webster converted a penalty goal to put her side ahead by one and take out the game.
The win makes it one all in three-match test series which will now see both the Australian Women and Men look to take out the AUS v USA Test Series come Saturday night at Brisbane Aquatic Centre.
Webster said it was a hard-fought contest and took everything in the tank to get across the line.
“It was grueling, it went four quarters. They're the best side in the world with 69 wins on the trot so to come away with the win, I'm pretty proud of that. It was in our own country so that was brilliant,” Webster said.
“But we've definitely got a lot to improve on and I'm sure that they'll come out firing for the third test match and the decider.
“We're playing 4-6 quarters on our days off so no team is fresh but I think in front of a crowd like this you've just got to keep battling on.
“They've got great arsenal… I say it time and time again their centres are brilliant, they're center-backs are good, they've got great outside shooters so you have to mix up your defence and keep moving in attack and I think that was the decider - we just kept moving and we drew a penalty in the last attack,” she said.
For the men, USA delivered a series equaliser in Brisbane, stealing a one-point win over the Aussie Sharks 10-9.
Not getting off to a good start to trail 0-3 at the end of the first period, the Aussie Sharks clawed their way back to lock scores 8-8 at the end of the third period.
While the Aussie Sharks managed another goal in the final period, two more from the USA sealed the win to make it one a piece in the three test match series and movc the event to a Series decider come Saturday.
With $100 for every Australian goal scored going towards the Australian Red Cross bushfire appeal, the Australian Water Polo teams raised $1900.
