BADMINTON: Two Aussie doubles pairings were in action at the badminton on Monday, as the group stages continued at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Australia’s Mixed Doubles pairing of Gronya Somerville and Simon Leung played their final match of the group play stage.
The Aussie pair was unable to overcome Denmark duo, Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje, and were defeated 2-0 (21-6, 21-14).
The match marked the end of Leung’s Tokyo campaign and he was pleased to have the opportunity to focus on sport and bank valuable competition experience.
“It was really good getting back together and playing again,” Leung said.
“It’s been a long time since we played against someone, rather than playing back at home by ourselves. Everything’s been good and I think there’s a lot more that we can bring to this partnership.
“Moving forward from the Olympics, the next big thing is the Commonwealth Games next year. Hopefully we’ll get to go and get some good results there, individually and as a team,” he said.
Hours later, Somerville teamed with Setyana Mapasa in the second of three group play matches in the women’s doubles.

The pair showed signs of improvement from their first-round match against Indonesia, but suffered a disappointing 2-0 (21-9, 21-12) defeat against China’s Yue Du and Yin Hui Li.
The pair have vowed to be more disciplined in their final match against world No. 15 pairing Denmark.
“Really stick to the plan and play something that is different, but is going to work against the opponent,” Somerville said.
Australia’s women’s doubles will play Denmark on Tuesday at 12:20pm AEST.
Australia’s only singles player Wendy Chen will play Bulgaria’s Linda Zetchiri at 2:20pm AEST.
