Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena has been confirmed as the venue for Australia's home Oceania basketball championships match against New Zealand.

BASKETBALL: Melbourne's Rod Laver Arena has been confirmed as the venue for Australia's home Oceania basketball championships match against New Zealand that doubles as a qualifier for the Rio Olympics.

The men's Boomers and women's Opals will play a double-header on August 15 at the 15,000-capacity venue in the opening match of a two-game series against the Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns.

The Opals then head across the Tasman to face the Kiwis in the north island city of Tauranga two days later while the Boomers will play on August 18 in Wellington.

The winners of the series will book a spot at next year's Rio Olympics.

"I love putting on the Australian jersey and playing in front of a hometown crowd in Melbourne will be extra special," said Melbourne-born Utah Jazz NBA guard Dante Exum, who made his Boomers debut during the Oceania Championships two years ago.

After he's finished in the NBA playoffs with Golden State Warriors, Australian fans will be hoping Andrew Bogut lines up for his first Boomers game in his home city in almost a decade.
