Brock Batty has bounced his way into Olympic history in Trampoline Gymnastics, recording a 13th place finish on debut.
The 17-year-old wrote his name in the record books as the youngest trampolinist from any country to compete in the Olympic Games since the sport was introduced at Sydney 2000.
In a transformed Bercy Arena, with the artistic gymnastics equipment swapped out for trampolines, a fiercely enthusiastic crowd created an atmosphere that seemed to only lift the gymnasts higher.
Competing in group one, Brock’s first routine on his debut in Trampoline Gymnastics was a strong one with clean execution, posting a score of 55.890 to finish in 12th.
However, a fall during his second routine prevented Brock from finishing in the top eight required to progress through to the final, recording a final placing of 13th at the end of the qualifying competition
“It’s been an awesome experience,” Brock said. “Feeling a bit of mixed emotions, but it’s been insane to get up and compete in front of a crowd like that.”
While his Olympic debut is a feat that he’s proud of, Brock knows he’s ready for more.
“The focus is to go back home, train hard, and hopefully go for a medal next time.”
The Australian Gymnastics Team will return to competition when the Rhythmic Gymnastics begins on 8 August, with Alexandra Kiroi-Bogatyreva competing in the Individual All-Around.
The quintet of Lidiia Iakovleva, Saskia Broedelet, Emmanouela Frroku, Phoebe Learmont and Jessica Weintraub will then take to the floor in the Group All-Around on 9 August.
