The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) today announced that the world’s largest diversified resources company, BHP Billiton, will sponsor the Australian Team as it prepares for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) today announced that the world’s largest diversified resources company, BHP Billiton, will sponsor the Australian Team as it prepares for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

BHP Billiton, the Official Diversified Minerals and Medals Sponsor of the Beijing Games, which will provide the raw materials to produce the Olympic medals, will become an official partner of the Australian Team in its efforts leading into the 2008 event.

“It is great to have an Australian icon like BHP Billiton backing our Team in Beijing. Like Australia’s Olympic athletes, BHP Billiton continues to be a dominant player on the world stage” said AOC President John Coates.

Through BHP Billiton’s sponsorship of the Games, Australian athletes will be competing for medals that in part come from Australia. The company’s Cannington mine in northwest Queensland and its Escondida and Spence operations in Chile will provide the materials needed to produce the gold, silver and bronze medals for the Games.

BHP Billiton Chief Executive Officer Chip Goodyear said the announcement presented the company with a number of unique opportunities.

“BHP Billiton is proud to be supporting the Australian Olympic team’s campaign leading into the Beijing Games. Our association with the Olympics presents many important opportunities for our company including being able to illustrate the alignment between the Olympic ideals and BHP Billiton’s Charter values,” he said.

Over the next 12 months, BHP Billiton will display the AOC’s Olympic ‘Flag and Rings’ logo when staging its many staff and community events throughout Australia that celebrate its association with the Games.
