It was a day of mixed emotions for the Australian Equestrian Team in the cross-country phase of the Eventing competition.
Christopher Burton flew around the course to finish clear and inside the time, while Kevin McNab was forced to withdraw following an injury to his horse.
Set against the spectacular backdrop of the Château de Versailles, the ride keeps Christopher and his horse Shadow Man in third position ahead of Monday’s jumping phase.
“It was amazing, he just did it so easily, he's a beautiful animal,” Burton said.
“I don’t want to get too nervous ahead of tomorrow, so we will just make sure the horse is okay, and we will give him a little jump in the morning to see how he feels, and hopefully I can do my best.”

Shane Rose set the pace for the Australians as the second rider on course for the day with his long-time ride Virgil. Shane also crossed the finish line with no jumping penalties but accumulated 2.80 time faults. Despite the increase in his overall score, he moves from 38th to 23rd position individually.
Unfortunately, Kevin did not complete the cross-country phase and elected to retire his horse, Don Quidam, on course, in the horse's best interest.
The horse was assessed by the Australian team veterinarian, who advised that Don Quidam sustained a soft tissue injury. He is currently undergoing treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.
Reserve athlete Shenae Lowings will step into the team position to complete the final jumping phase tomorrow riding Bold Venture.
The competition continues on Monday 29th July starting at 7pm AEST.
