Tatiana Borodulina has qualified Australian places for all three short track distances at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, following the completion of the North American leg of the World Cup season.
Borodulina finished sixth in the 1000m, and also collected two 12th placings in 500m and 1500m at the Marquette, Wisconsin, event.
A week earlier in Montreal, in the first of the two Vancouver qualifying tournaments, the 24-year-old AIS scholarship athlete had skated to three top ten results, with the overall return from the two events putting her well inside the 32-woman field that will contest the short track races at the Games.
The news from Marquette over the weekend was disappointing for the Australian men, however, with Lachlan Hay and Jeremy Beck both going out early in the 1000m, Beck posting the best result with 41st.
The results in that event and in the 1500m, when Hay placed highest at 39th, mean that the Australian representation in the men’s short track events at the Games is somewhat up in the air, and will only become clear when national quota allocations of athletes are completed.
The Australian men’s quest to qualify had been disrupted several months ago by an ankle injury to leading skater Elliott Shriane, and despite Hay and Beck both being able to post top 10 and 20 results last season, they were not able to reproduce that form over the past two weeks.
Olympic qualifying prospects of Australia’s long track speed skating brigade continue to improve, with Sophie Muir recording two national records in Heerenveen, The Netherlands, over the weekend.
The former inline world champion finished in 11th place in the first of two Division B 500m races, establishing a new Australian mark of 39.68 seconds for the distance.
The time was also just 0.18 of a second above the Olympic qualifying time for Vancouver.
Muir backed up with another national record when she finished in 18th place in the Division B 1000m in a time of 1 minute 19.5 seconds, despite carrying a cold at the time.
Josh Lose finished in 25th place in the Division B 5000m, while Ben Southee was one place further back in the Division B 500m.
