From the Margaret River (WA) to Mount Isa (QLD), Wagga Wagga (NSW) to Warburton (VIC), Milingimbi (NT) to Millicent (SA) to Flinders Island (TAS), more than 300 schools across Australia are preparing to participate in Olympic Day.
The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) is inviting schools to participate in this special event and celebrate the Olympic Games through sport, education and culture.
Across the globe each year, millions of students celebrate Olympic Day on 23 June and in 2007 the Boxing Kangaroo will lead the celebrations in Australia.
“The AOC is delighted to present Olympic Day as part of our online education program,” said AOC President John Coates.
“We are committed to the development of young athletes and youth in general and I urge schools throughout Australia to celebrate Olympic Day.”
The AOC has developed a free resource for primary educators to assist schools get involved and become part of this world wide event.
The resource is a series of 10 lessons designed to engage students to organise, plan, manage and participate in a school sporting and cultural event – Olympic Day, falling on or as close to the 23 June 2007.
Amanda Maxwell, Sport Teacher from Milingimbi Community Education Centre, located on the island of Yarrwi, 500kms East of Darwin, and about 1km off the mainland, is very excited about participating in Olympic Day.
“I want to be able to give the students every opportunity to learn about the World outside of their community, and as I'm the Physical Eduation and Sport teacher, I thought that participation in Olympic Day would be a fun way to involve the students. These students have an amazing natural athletic ability! And I want them to be proud of what they can do and achieve,” she said.
