Craig Branch has posted the first of two top 60 per cent of field results he needs to qualify for selection to the Australian team in the alpine skiing combined event.
Branch finished 18th of 47 skiers in the downhill leg of the super combined event, 3.6 seconds behind the leading time of 2005 World Cup downhill champion Michael Walchhofer of Austria.
He slipped back in the slalom leg to end the day in 36th place with a total time of two minutes 50.92 seconds.
Austrian Benjamin Raich won the event from Norwegian veteran Kjetil Andre Aamodt.
Branch will attempt to collect his second top 80 per cent result in Kitzbuhel next weekend.
In the men's downhill in Wengen, Branch finished in 44th place in a time of two minutes 36.52 seconds, with AJ Bear coming in three places further back in a time of two minutes 36.95.
US skier Daron Rahlves won the event in a time of two minutes 30.54 seconds from the Austrian pair of Walchhofer and Fritz Strobl.
