Bonnyrigg Heights Public School (BHPS) is one of only 22 primary schools to participate in a unique event to celebrate the Sydney 2000 10th Anniversary next Wednesday 15 September at Sydney Olympic Park.
“We are a sporting school and this is a wonderful opportunity for our students,” primary teacher John Morris said.
More than 1200 primary students will relive the highlights of the Sydney 2000 Opening Ceremony inside ANZ Stadium before participating in an afternoon of sports activities.
“We have been conducting some preparation work inside and outside the classroom for the event. The students have been learning about values of the Olympic Games, the memories from Sydney as well as trying some of the Olympic sports,” Morris said.
During the afternoon students will have the opportunity to participate in two different activities, one being a track event providing students with the excitement of running on a Games time track surface and the second, a skill based activity.
“It’s been full on with our school sports program over the last couple of weeks,” Morris said.
“We’ve been looking at the sports of the Olympic Games and the range of skills involved. The kids have been competing in the 100m, 200m, 800m, discus and shot put.”
The modified activities replicate the skills associated with a variety of Olympic and Paralympic sports and include hockey, basketball, sitting volleyball and guided athletic relays.
Sixty students in Years Five and Six from BHPS will attend the celebrations and among them are some eager sports participants.
“There are some budding sport stars coming out on the day and they are so excited to have the chance to meet Olympians,” Morris said.
Primary student Ryan Flemming is a young man with a definite career path. The promising BHPS and Marconi Goalkeeper has already travelled overseas in the pursuit of his dream to attend a football academy in Barcelona.
Flemming was involved in the recent Everton Down Under Tour playing a demonstration game on the ANZ Stadium surface during the half time break and has always held the Olympic Games in the highest regard.
"I want to be a professional soccer player one day,” he said. “To me, representing my country at an Olympic Games would be an even greater achievement than making it to the World Cup.”
School captain Aaron Liu is another talented sportsperson competing in swimming and tennis. Liu is excited at the prospect of participating in the 10th Anniversary event.
"Going to the event is...like really exciting,” he said.
“I've never been to the stadium before and it will be amazing to meet famous Olympians. I want to be famous too, when I grow up".
Laura Dan is also talented swimmer, representing the school in District competitions. She is looking forward to the atmosphere of the event and the chance to mix with students from other schools, in a true Olympic spirit of friendship.
"It will mean a lot to me to meet other people with a sporting dream and really exciting to hear from those who have already made it".
More than 60 Olympians and Paralympians will accompany the students throughout the day and participate with them in the sports activities. They will sign autographs, pose for photographs and see if they still have the edge over a group of competitive primary students.
The schools celebration is one of several events planned to commemorate the Sydney 2000 10th Anniversary. Volunteers have been invited to return to Sydney Olympic Park for a reunion and Olympians are coming from around the country to witness the relighting of the Olympic Cauldron.
