CANOE/KAYAK: Sunshine Coast pair Alyssa Bull and Alyce Burnett have capped off a successful opening day of racing for the Australian canoe sprint athletes at the Oceania Championships in Adelaide by secure two Olympic quotas with victory in their K2 500 heat.
Bull and Burnett dominated the race from start to finish, producing a time of 1:44.38 to finish 2.42 seconds ahead South Australian Cat McArthur and Western Australian Jaime Roberts.
Crucially their victory saw them finish ahead of boats from New Zealand, Samoa and the Cook Islands to secure two Olympic women’s kayak quotas.
It capped off an outstanding day of racing for the Australian team after Steve Bird, Jo Brigden-Jones, Marius Florian and Jason Nejman also secured Olympic quotas.
Bull and Burnett’s heat win saw them advance to the K2 500 A final tomorrow where they will go head to head with NSWIS pair Naomi Flood and Jo Brigden-Jones in the battle to win the first of two Olympic selection trials.
The women’s K2 500 A final is scheduled to be raced at 9 am local time on Saturday.
