Alisa Camplin has missed a medal at the Mt Buller World Aerials by one place, but posted a top five result that meets the qualifying standard for the Torino 2006 Australian Olympic team.
Competing for the first time in 18 months, the 30-year-old Flying Kangaroo landed a very strong opening triple twisting somersault to score 99.58 points, moving into second place behind reigning World Cup champion Nina Li of China on 103.10 points after the first round of jumping.
Team-mate Jacqui Cooper was not far behind, scoring a personal best 92.24 points for her double twisting double somersault to sit in fourth place.
In the second round, Camplin wound back to a lower degree of difficulty double twisting double somersault, but came into her take off a little slow and lost points on her landing.
Li also put down a less than perfect landing on her second triple twisting double, earning 91.12 points from the judges, but her total points score of 194.22 points was enough to take the gold medal.
Li’s team-mate Nannan Xu moved into second place on 187.91 points with the highest scoring jump of the second round, and 2002 World Cup champion Alla Tsuper of Belarus claimed the bronze with a 181.78 total, relegating Camplin’s 180.85 points total to fourth place.
The men’s gold went to defending World Cup champion Jeret Peterson (#1) of the United States on 246.25, with Kyle Nissen of Canada in second on 242.71 and Joe Pack of the United States in third on 240.20
Lainie Cole, competing in the morning’s B seed competition, finished in ninth place, the fifth top ten result of her career.
Cooper, performing only a single twisting double for her second attempt, finished in eleventh place.
Bree Munro placed 21st and Liz Gardner, expected to be one of the best of the Australians pre-event, was unable to put down either of her triple twisting double and finished in 23rd place.
