CANOE/KAYAK SPRINT: On Day 11 of the Olympic Games the canoe sprinters have been met with chilly conditions at Eton Dorney.

Stay tuned to all action as Australia looks to qualify more crews for the medal races.

Women’s K2 500m

Lyndsie Fogarty was back in the boat a day after the women’s K4 500m and paired up with surf lifesaving recruit Naomi Flood in the heats of the women’s K2 500m.

A relatively new combination, Flood and Fogarty started slowly and found themselves in sixth place but picked up a good rhythm around the 250 mark that brought them back into contention with 150m remaining.

There was a blanket finish on the line as Australia surged and on the last stroke they sealed fourth, with the margin separating them from sixth placed Cuba just three hundredths of a second.

Women’s K1 500m Heat

Alana Nicholls secured a fifth place in the world championships final last year and comes into the event considered a genuine medal chance.

Her heat today offered the first six paddlers a chance to make the semi-finals and Nicholls showed her class with a measured display to finish second.

The West Australian was paddling within herself on the way to the line and will be confident of progressing to the final via the semis later this morning.

Nicholls' time of 1:53.823 saw her cross the line under half a second behind British paddler Rachael Cawthorn.

Men’s C2 1000m Heat

Australian young guns Alex Haas and Jake Donaghey lined up in the heats of the men’s C2 1000m, a heat that contained gold medal favourites Germany.

The 17 year-olds have great prospects for the future and they showed some good early signs before dropping slightly off the pace at the 500m mark.

They crossed the line in 3:52.589 in sixth place and will race in the semi-finals later this morning.

Men’s K4 1000m Heat

Australia’s silver medal world championship crew of Jacob Clear, Murray Stewart, Dave Smith and Tate Smith were first in action on the second day of the canoe sprint program at Eton Dorney.

With the first crew gaining automatic progression to the final Australia faced a challenge against crews including Hungary, Czech Republic and Russia.

Czech Republic had two World Cups this year but Australia hung with the Europeans as well as Hungary through 500m before the Czechs and Hungarians broke free.

Hungary claimed the automatic qualification spot by just a tenth of a second in a sprint to the line while Australia finished a couple of boat lengths adrift in a time of 2:59.789.

They will race a semi-final later this morning.

Semi final:

After finishing third in their heat, the Australian crew regrouped and took an early lead in the 1000m race, executing their strokes with good rhythm and efficiency.

The Australian crew, which won silver at the 2011 world championships, faced a late surge from Germany but had enough to cover the current world champions, crossing the line in a time of 2:52.505.
