Olympic Winter Institute mogul skier Dale Begg-Smith has recorded a career best sixth placing in the World Cup moguls in Deer Valley, Utah.

Begg-Smith, 19, qualified in 12th place, then produced a high quality run on the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic course to take equal sixth place alongside United States skier David Babic in the final.

It was the second top ten placing in his rookie year for Australia, beating by one place his seventh three weeks ago in Mont Tremblant, Canada, and it moves him to 17th on the World Cup standings.

Olympic Winter Institute team-mate Michael Robertson, who finished in 29th place after a mistake on the bottom air, is two places behind at 19th on the standings.

The Deer Valley event, the seventh of the season, was won by United States skier Toby Dawson from Finland's Janne Lahtela.

Lahtela has a commanding lead on the World Cup standings after three victories and two silver medal placings.

OlympicWinter Institute team members Nick Fisher finished in 20th place with Jason Begg-Smith in 34th.

In the women’s event, won by Norwegian Kari Traa, OWI team members Manuela Berchtold and Jane Sexton both missed the final, finishing in 16th and 20th place.

Traa moved into second place on the World Cup points table after the victory, behind Canadian Jennifer Heil, third in the DeerValley round.

A dual moguls event will be held on Saturday evening US time (Sunday morning AEST).

Australia’s Flying Kangaroos aerial skiing team will be in action early on Monday morning on the Deer Valley Olympic site.
