Cooper sets new world mark in US trials

Australian aerial skier Jacqui Cooper has broken her own single jump world record score in winning the United States world championships selection trials.

Australian aerial skier Jacqui Cooper has broken her own single jump world record score in winning the United States world championships selection trials.

Cooper's triple twisting triple somersault earned 114.81 points from the judges at the Park City event, 1.01 points higher than the single jump record she set in the qualifying round of the Torino 2006 Olympic Games.

Deteriorating weather and high winds hampered her second jump, which was only worth 92.72 points, leaving her overall score of 207.53 points well short of her Torino total of 213.36 points.

It was, however, the second highest total in women's aerial skiing history.

Not only did Cooper finish nearly 80 points ahead of her nearest competitor, but she outscored all but one of the men at the event.

Cooper will line up again in a World Cup event in Mont Gabriel, Canada, on January 7, with three more North American events to follow for the 33-year-old Melbourne skier in the lead-up to the World Championships in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy, on January 27.
