BUENOS AIRES 2018: Hold on to your hats, because in 24 hours’ time the world will celebrate the Opening Ceremony of the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games in a fully inclusive, 360-degree live street party!

It will be the first time in the history of the Olympic Movement that an Opening Ceremony will be held outside a stadium and open to the public for free.

The ceremony will take place at 9 de Julio Avenue (July 9 avenue) - the largest Avenue in the world - centred around the famous Obelisk in the middle of the city of Buenos Aires.

Setting up for Opening Ceremony

The ceremony will involve one of the biggest logistical endeavours in Argentina’s history.

Some 2000 people will be in charge of carrying it out, including more than 350 performers, technicians and musicians from the Argentine theatre company Fuerza Bruta, and production by Ozono Producciones.

The Olympic family, led by IOC president Thomas Bach, will be at the event to officially open the third edition of the Youth Olympic Games, celebrating more than 4000 athletes from 206 nations who will compete over the 12 days of competition.

Canberra 800m runner Keely Small will lead Team Australia into the ceremony, after being announced as the nation’s Flag Bearerat the Team Reception in Sydney, prior to departure.

The unique spectacle promises to celebrate sport, diversity and gender equality, and will provide the perfect start for the first Olympic event to feature the same number of male and female athletes.

This important milestone will be highlighted during the lighting of the Olympic cauldron, with organisers revealing that a woman and a man have been chosen to light it together.

The ceremony will kick off at 6pm on October 6th (8am Sunday AEDT) and you can watch the Opening Ceremony LIVE on olympics.com.au.
