FREESTYLE SKIING: Mother Nature intervened for the finals of the Australian New Zealand Cup Skier X on Sunday 18th August with the finals cancelled due to poor weather.

The storm of the season has descended on the alpine area with Hotham receiving a further 11cm overnight. Strong winds, poor visibility and the Road Runner chairlift on windhold all combined to put a halt to proceedings for the event.

Presentations were held this morning with the results determined by the qualifying times yesterday.

Katya Crema was crowned Australian National Women's Champion after her two wins yesterday. Crema who is skiing exceptionally well this year was philosophical about the results. Read her blog here >>

"It is a bit disappointing that finals were cancelled today as that's why we race skier X to go head-to-head. But we still got two results out of it which is great for the developing athletes," stated Crema after the presentations this morning.

Great Britain skiers certainly made the most of their visit with solid training at Hotham and two of their athletes, Liz Stevenson and Ed Drake doing very well in the competition.

"I felt I had a pretty good week overall, we got a lot of good training with the aussies before the race so that was really productive for me as we don't get a lot of track time with the British team. The race was really good considering the conditions and it was a shame we didn't get finals off, but at the end of the day we got some results," stated Stevenson after her two second placings.

Drake who had the fastest time in qualifying and also a close second place shared honors with Japan's Kenji Kono who also had a first and second placing.

"Great, really good, skied very well and got good conditions and it makes the trip worth it," stated Drake after his stay here in Hotham the past week.

Although the weather did play a huge part in determining the outcome of this event, the fresh snowfalls that are predicted this week will set the snow season up for a big finish. Over 60cm of snow is expected to fall to add to the existing one metre snow base at Hotham.

All eyes will now be focusing on the upcoming Australian New Zealand Snowboard X event to be held here in Hotham on Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 August. The weather outlook looks like great sunny weather for the next event.

Australian World Champion Alex "Chumpy" Pullin will be the main man other athletes will be trying to beat on the Hotham Rider Cross course. Pullin who has been one of the best performers since the last Winter Olympics in Vancouver 2010, will be using the Australian New Zealand cup as fine tuning before his assault on the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
