Croatia’s Janica Kostelic skied an outstanding run in the downhill component to win gold in the ladies’ combined at San Sicario Fraiteve.
Kostelic, who snared three gold medals at Salt Lake City 2002, including the combined, was suffering from the effects of the flu, but still managed to rally to clinch victory.
At only 24, Kostelic has been dubbed the “Croatian Sensation” and now has five Olympic medals in her illustrious career.
Austria’s Marlies Schild led the competition after two runs of the slalom for a total time of 1.21.22. She led Kostelic by 0.46 seconds heading in the downhill but had to settle for the silver medal.
Anja Paerson of Sweden took the bronze.
