Two Aussie pairs achieved podium finishes in the Pro Tour Elite 16 event at the Great Ocean Road Beach Volleyfest in Torquay, drawing to a close a massive two weeks of world-class competition and family fun.
Tom Hodges and Zach Schubert produced their best-ever finish at the top level, taking silver. They were not far away from being gold medallists, as they pushed the French combination of Youssef Krou and Arnaud Gauthier-Rat in the gold medal match to just fall short 20-22 21-23.
“It was an amazing tournament, and we have to be proud of finishing second,” Zach said.

The Victorian benefitted from a boisterous home crowd.
“The crowd really helped us get through it. We were down a few points and the crowd got behind us and reinvigorated us and gave us energy – it was awesome.”
The duo have come a long way in 2022, after only teaming up earlier in the year in the futures competition grade. Since then they've worked up into the challengers, into the elite and now to elite silver medallists.
South Australia’s Tom Hodges was immensely proud of the progress he and Zach, who battled back from a double knee surgery, have made in short period of time.
“We started in May at the futures level and had to build a long way," Tom said.
"This is our first season together, so you couldn’t really ask for much more to cap off the season with a silver medal in the elite 16 at home. It’s been a massive journey for us."

The pair defeated fellow Aussie combination Paul Burnett and Chris McHugh on their way to the podium, handing them a 2-0 loss in the quarterfinals on Friday.
Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallists Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho del Solar snagged a bronze medal in the women’s event, defeating American pair Kristen Nuss and Taryn Kloth in a tight three-set bronze-medal match 21-14 21-19 15-13.
“This is our second tough battle against them, so we knew we had to bring our A-game,” Mariafe said.

“It was just a matter of staying patient and sticking at it until the end.”
Taliqua also held the Torquay crowd in high regard.
“Torquay’s really put on a show for us, and really helped all us Aussies out there,” she said.
