DIVING: Teenager Georgia Sheehan has overcome a disastrous dive in the preliminary round of the Madrid Grand Prix to win silver in the 3-metre springboard this morning.

And Commonwealth Games gold medallist Domonic Bedggood has warmed up nicely for next month’s World Championships with silver in the men’s platform final.

15-year-old Sheehan was lucky to make it out of the first round of the springboard after scoring just four for her third dive of the competition.

First she balked, which is an automatic two point deduction, and then botched her dive at the second attempt.

But she recovered to finish 11th, with the top 12 progressing, while teammate Anabelle Smith cruised through in second.

Sheehan then scraped into the final as the last qualifier, while Smith maintained her form to qualify second.

But then Sheehan found her consistency when it mattered most, including 7.5s for the dive she botched in the prelims, to finish second behind China’s Zhihuan Xu.

Sheehan won gold at last year’s World Junior Championships, and finished a close fourth in the 1-metre springboard at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Smith finished sixth in the final and will now head to the University Games confident of a strong showing.

Gold Coast 19-year-old Domonic Bedggood also made a slow start to his competition, qualifying fourth in the prelims of the 10-metre platform.

But his form improved dramatically in the semis, finishing less than one point behind China’s Bowen Huang, and he took that form into the final to split two Chinese divers, Huang and Zigan Huang, to claim silver.

Bedggood won gold alongside Matthew Mitcham in the 10-metre synchro at last year’s Commonwealth Games.
