EQUESTRIAN: London Olympian Chris Burton is banking on ex-racehorse TS Jamaimo to put him in the medal hunt at the 2014 World Equestrian Games in the eventing three-day starting on Thursday 28th August.
The 32 year-old is confident of being in the mix for a medal and is hoping his new mount, an ex-racehorse from Australia, will have what it takes to match it with the best in the world.
Burton secured the horse late last year after offering to ride it for a mate at the Australian International three day event, where he jumped on the horse only days before the competition.
He won the event, a victory that had the international equestrian world in amazement, and since then there has been no looking back.
"I was asked to ride the horse in Adelaide after poor Will Enzinger broke his leg, so I was thrown on him very much at the last minute and I think everyone was surprised we came through Adelaide in first place.
"He (TS Jamaimo) is an ex-racehorse, a full thoroughbred and I think for the test we're about to see from the WEG course designer, he's a good horse to have," said Burton.
The duo come into WEG with solid performances under their belt and for Burton he brings to the team considerably more experience compared to his first WEG in 2010.
"I feel I've come a long way since I represented Australia for the first time in Kentucky," he said.
He is joined by five other experienced team mates including dual Olympic gold medallist Stuart Tinney, Beijing silver medallist Shane Rose, London Olympian Sam Griffiths, 2010 WEG representative Paul Tapner and Australian team debutant Bill Levett.
"I think in a lot of people's mind the World Equestrian Games is as tough as it gets.
"We are confident. I think we have a very strong team of serious competitors and I think that is what is going to hold us up in the end," said Burton.
Day one of eventing competition gets underway in Le Pin, Normandy, on Thursday 28th August with two days of dressage. Saturday will feature the cross country with Sunday's final jumping phase to be held at the main WEG stadium in Caen.
