Astrid Loch-Wilkinson and Brigette Egan are about to become the first women to represent Australia at the World Bobsleigh Championships.
The pair and coach Will Alstergren have headed to Calgary, with training due to start on February 19 and the four heats of the event scheduled for February 25 and 26.
In only her second season and after just three races at World Cup level, Loch-Wilkinson not only qualified for the World Championships, but also reached within two places of the qualifying standard (Olympic-adjusted) for Torino 2006.
She finished 17th pilot for the season (again, Olympic-adjusted), a huge result.
The Australian men's team of Rob Calleja and Jeremy Rolleston go to Calgary with Australia's first home-made sled. The new sled - the ‘Rob Bob’ - has been developed by Calleja over the past three years, modelled on the Swiss and German sleds.
