Fitzgerald's dream run ends at quarter finals
Ned Fitzgerald exceeded expectations to make it into the quarter finals. Ned went down to Korean M C Seo 15-3 in a great day of fencing for the Aussie.

Ned Fitzgerald can very proud of his efforts today at the International Expo Centre after coming 5th in the Men's Foil Individual.

Despite taking the number three ranking into the quarter finals, Fitzgerald went down to Korean M C Seo 15-3.

"I didn’t meet my target of making the podium and that means there’s room for improvement. So I guess ill just keep working hard on my fencing," the determined Aussie said.

The Aussie looked solid in the pool rounds this morning with 13 fencers in the field aiming for the Youth Olympic Games gold medal.

Fitzgerald produced an amazing effort throughout his five rounds to sit on top of Pool 2 going into the round of 16.

Despite losing the first bout, Ned fought back and won the next four rounds showing great determination.

It wasn’t just his Mother and Sister cheering, a group of student’s from Ned’s school who are on exchange in China were also in attendance supporting the Victorian.

"It (the support) was absolutely amazing! I was surprised at the amount of people that were cheering for me," Fitzgerald said.

Going into the round of 16, Ned was ranked third behind CYR Choi (HKG) and A Rzadkowski (POL) who dominated Pool 1.

The three have all received a bye in the round of 16 and progressed straight through to the quarter finals.

Fizgerald knew that Seo would be tough to beat and unfortunately couldn't move through to the semi finals.

Before the competition, Ftzgerald was ranked 11th out of the field of 13 so the Fencer can hold his head high after today's performance.

Unfortunately for Fitzgerald he misses out on the mixed team event with the top four going through from each gender.

"The next competition for me after the Youth Olympic Games is a National comp in Perth. So when I arrive home on the 30th August, my focus will be on that," Fitzgerald said.
