Jessica Fox has recorded the fastest C1 women's heat time as racing commenced at the Australian Slalom Championships.

CANOE/KAYAK: Jessica Fox has recorded the fastest C1 women's heat time as racing commenced at the Australian Slalom Championships on the upper Mersey River in Tasmania.

The current world champion was the only woman to post a sub 100 second time, executing a clean run of 99.80 to lead Alison Borrows by 2.60 seconds.

The result saw Fox become the under-23 age group champion ahead of her younger sister, Noemie Fox and Hobart paddler Kate Eckhardt.

The Australian Slalom Championships is the first time since 2012 that the Mersey River has staged a national event.

“It is nice to be back and it is great to have the support of Hydro Tasmania so that we can have a little bit of water on this river as it is a little bit rocky but it is pretty good to spend some time on a natural river after spending so much time on Penrith on man-made courses,” Fox said.

Fox recently returned to Australia in the latter stages of 2015 after spending some time in Brazil training on the 2016 Olympic course.

Now refreshed after the festive break Fox is pleased to be back racing.

“It has been a couple of months since we have had a race so obviously after Christmas and New Years so it is good to get back on the water, have a good race and a good hit out because it is one of our last races before selection in February,” Fox said.

Western Australians dominated the junior C1 women’s event with Kira Wall taking out the under-18 age group title while Alexandria Choate triumphed in the under-16s.

In the men’s C2 events, Kaspar and Kristian Fiebig recorded the fastest C2 men’s time of 114.54 to finish 0.01 seconds ahead of Victorian pair Warwick Draper and Alistair Anderson.
