CANOE/KAYAK - SLALOM: Jessica Fox provided Australia's highlights at the first of five ICF Slalom World Cups in Cardiff.

Fox kick-started Australia’s World Cup medal tally winning silver in the women’s C1 final on Saturday.

The 2012 Olympic K1 silver medallist finished 2.14 seconds behind Great Britain’s Kimberley Wood who won the gold in 112.57.

NSWIS paddler Alison Borrows produced her best international result to date finishing fourth just outside of the medals. Rosalyn Lawrence also made it to the final finishing tenth after missing a gate on the upper section of the course.

19-year-old Fox was the only Australian to feature on the final day, finishing fifth in the women’s K1 final.

Fox paid the price for two gate touches (four second penalty) which based on her raw time down the course relegated the NSWIS star from third to fifth.

Great Britain paddler Elizabeth Neave won the gold in 97.63, 0.38 seconds ahead of Slovakian Elena Kaliska.

In the other final on Sunday, the men’s C2, Slovakian legends Pavol and Peter Hochschorner made the challenging 25 gate course look easy winning in 97.96.

Newly formed Australian crew of Robin Jeffery and Ethan Hodson were eliminated after the heats in 21st.

Lucien Delfour finished eighth in the men’s K1 final after he placed second in his semifinal after a blistering clean fast run.

Germany clinched the gold and silver with former World champion Fabian Doerfler winning ahead of defending champion Sebastian Schubert.

Melbourne’s Jaxon Merritt produced his best World Cup result finishing 15th in the semifinal.  On World Cup debut U23 paddler Joey Croft finished 50th in his heat.

Unfortunately no Australians advanced to the men’s C1 final on Saturday with Penrith canoeist Ian Borrows the highest ranked Australian in 19th.

Jeffery finished a disappointing 31st, while Victorian Christian Fabris finished 37th.

The team will now travel into camp and prepare for the second World Cup in Augsburg, Germany from 28-30 June.
