CANOE/KAYAK - SLALOM: Nineteen-year-old Jessica Fox went one better than her silver medal performance in Cardiff last weekend to win Gold in the women’s C1 final at ICF World Cup 2 in Augsburg, Germany over the weekend.

The 2012 Olympic K1 silver medallist headed into the final in red-hot form after producing the quickest semifinal time earlier in the day.

It was a polished performance by Fox who outlasted the nerves as the last paddler to attack the course in the final to win in 132.69 despite two gate touches.

Great Britain paddler Mallory Franklin finished second 2.37 seconds behind Fox with fellow countrywomen and Cardiff World Cup winner Kimberley Woods finishing third.

NSWIS pair Rosalyn Lawrence and Alison Borrows also reached the final finishing sixth and ninth respectively.

Earlier in the day Penrith Valley duo Lucien Delfour and Joey Croft finished 16th and 39th respectively in the men’s K1 semifinal.

German duo Paul Boeckelmann and Sebastian Schubert used their local paddling knowledge to their advantage in the final producing a one-two for their home fans with Boeckelmann winning the gold in 97.59.

In somewhat of an upset world number 57 Mathieu Biazizzo of France finished third.

The men’s C1 final was dominated by Slovakian canoeists with Alexander Slafkovsky edging Matej Benus for the gold. Local favourite Sideris Tasiadis finished third.
Western Australian Robin Jeffery was the best placed Australian finishing 26th in the semifinal.

Day 2 results

The final day of the second ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup in Augsburg, Germany has concluded with Victorian Sarah Grant the best of the Australians finishing eighth in the women’s K1 final.

Grant reached the final after producing the sixth quickest time in the semifinal to start the day.

In the final Grant got off to a great start executing a smooth and clean rhythm to post an excellent second split time of 70.28, but two gate touches on 19 and 21 in the run to the finish proved costly for Grant, relegating the 26 year old out of medal contention.

Grant eventually finished 7.10 seconds behind French 2012 Olympic champion Emilie Fer who won in 112.53.

German duo Jasmin Schornberg and Cindy Poeschel gave the home crowd something to cheer about collecting the silver and bronze medals.

Yesterday’s C1W winner Jessica Fox could not repeat the same precise paddling that saw her top the podium yesterday with three gate touches relegating her down the order to 12th.

Old Bonalbo paddler Rosalyn Lawrence finished 16th.

At just their second ICF World Cup paddling together in the C2, Western Australian Robin Jeffery and NSWIS canoeist Ethan Hodson finished 13th in the C2M semifinal.

It was an encouraging performance by the newly formed pair who managed to execute a clean run while many of their more experienced opponents struggled to navigate the technical 22 gate course cleanly.

The C2 was eventually won by French pair Gauthier Klauss and Matthieu Peche in 113.86, 0.42 seconds ahead of London Olympic gold medallists Timothy Baillie and Etienne Stott.

The Poland crew of Marcin Pochwala and Piotr Szczepanski finished third.

The team will now have a short break before going into camp to prepare for the third ICF World Cup in La Seu d’Urgell, Spain from 5-7 July.
